Useful in parts

Some sections were excellent and others felt like filler.

I have been working with javascript for a few years now and I still found plenty here that was new to me. Some of the material is available elsewhere, but rarely presented this clearly. The early chapters move quickly through material I already knew, but the later sections were genuinely new to me. Borrow it first if you can, or at least check the table of contents carefully before buying.

Clear, thorough, and genuinely useful

This is the one to get if you are serious about javascript.

I read this over a couple of weekends alongside a small side project, which turned out to be the ideal way to approach it. Some terminology is introduced without much ceremony; I had to look a few things up along the way. The writing is direct and does not waste space on filler, which I value in a technical book. The examples are small enough to type out and experiment with, which is exactly what I want from a book like this. Worth the money and the reading time, without hesitation.

Well worth picking up

Strong content, uneven pacing. I would still recommend it.

This is the third book I have read on javascript this year, and it is comfortably the best of them. I appreciated the honesty about what the book does not cover — it saved me from expecting things that were not there. Some of the material is available elsewhere, but rarely presented this clearly. The balance between theory and practice is well judged; neither side dominates. Four stars, and I suspect a second edition could easily push it to five.
